Dorthy Leavitt Obituary

Dorothy Mae Leavitt

October 21, 1930 – December 20, 2025

Dorothy Mae Thompson was born on October 21, 1930, along with her twin sister Doris, to Ray
and Bonnie Thompson in Sunnyside, WA. The family, including older sister Jean, moved to
Thorp, WA where they continued to farm and raise cattle. It was at Thorp School where she met
her future husband Dale Leavitt. They were married in 1950 and settled in Thorp where they
owned a dairy farm, and Dorothy tended to their four children: Gaylene, Dale Jr., Rick and Dan.

Eventually Dale would become a teacher, and the couple moved away from their home town.
Dorothy was a popular figure in every community Dale taught in, including Brewster,
Snoqualmie and Ellensburg. Her work experience included Weyerhaeuser, CWU, and Twin City
Foods. Her favorite job as activity coordinator at Gold Leaf nursing home allowed her to use her
musical talent at piano; she was an excellent player, especially considering she played by ear.
Another one of her passions was playing card games, and Dorothy loved hosting her friends for
an afternoon or evening of Canasta or Oh Hell. She also shared her love of games with her
grandchildren who have fond memories of friendly but competitive games of Scrabble. Perhaps
Dorothy’s greatest joy, though, was reading a good book. She loved all genres and styles from
Sylvia Plath to Betty McDonald and everything in between.

After she and Dale retired, the couple moved to Lake Stevens and Snohomish, WA before
eventually making their way back to Ellensburg where Dorothy could be closer to her twin sister
Doris. Always the adventurers, Dale and Dorothy traveled to various places in the world
including Ireland, England, Scotland, Japan, New York and Alaska. Eventually, Dale and
Dorothy would spend their winters in Palm Springs, enjoying the warm weather and, in
Dorothy’s case, an occasional casino visit.

Dorothy passed away on December 20, 2025, and was loved by family, friends and neighbors
alike. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Bonnie Thompson, and sister Doris
Harmon. Dorothy is survived by her sister Jean Wyckoff, her husband of 75 years Dale, and her
four children, Gaylene, Dale Jr. (Kazuko), Rick (Sheree) and Dan (Sheryl), as well as eleven
grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
