Emily Griswold Obituary

Emily Edith Lounsbury Griswold, age 87, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025, in Ephrata, Washington.

Emily was born on May 29, 1938, in Spokane, Washington, to Emma Westphal and Raymond Lounsbury. She was raised on a homestead in St. Maries, Idaho, where she developed a lifelong appreciation for hard work, family, and self-reliance. She later attended her senior year of high school in Warden, Washington, graduating in 1956. Following a pen pal relationship, Emily married her beloved husband, Quien Perry Griswold, who preceded her in death by 46 years.  They made their home in Moses Lake, Washington, where she spent many years devoted to her family and community. During Quien’s military service in the Navy and Air Force, Emily traveled and lived with him in California, Florida, Japan, France, and Turkey. These experiences broadened Emily’s world while strengthening her devotion to family and home. Emily was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her children Jeff Griswold (Kathy), Stan Griswold (Diane), Donna Scaggs (Monte), and Paul Griswold (Irem) brought great joy along with her 16 grandchildren,17 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Jeff Griswold, her son-in-law, Monte Scaggs, and her siblings Rose Klatt, Arthur Lounsbury, and Ann Doyle.  She is survived by her siblings Cora Pike, Steve Lounsbury, Joyce Cook, Herman Lounsbury, and Owen Lounsbury. During her working years, Emily was employed in research and development in the food industry, contributing to work related to potato products, including time with Carnation, Simplot, and Nestlé. Emily was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings throughout her life. She found joy in tending her beautiful yard and garden, reading, and preserving family history. Known for her independence, kindness, and quiet strength, Emily was thoughtful of others and consistently gave of herself in service. She will be remembered as a sweet and generous woman with true grit.  She lived selflessly, and cared deeply for those around her. Emily will be laid to rest at Pioneer Memorial Gardens in Moses Lake, Washington, beside her husband in a private family graveside service.  A viewing for friends and family will be Friday, January 2nd, between 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that acts of kindness or service be offered in her memory, as she so often did for others.
