James “Jimmy” Edwin Choate, age 72, passed away peacefully in his home on July 21,
2024.
James was born in Weed, California, on July 13, 1952, and soon after, he moved to
Oregon, where he grew up in the Dexter/Pleasant Hill area. He attended Pleasant Hill
High School then spent the first chapter of his life as a logger, traveling between
Springfield, Oregon, and the Oregon Coast.
James moved to Boise, Idaho, where he worked in construction. He especially loved
building churches, schools, and hospitals, and he would boast that he had left his name
on the bones of many buildings he helped construct. He was a hard worker and moved
up to supervisor positions in most of the roles he had.
James had a love for the ladies and liquor, and he was a self-proclaimed "outlaw" who
had a passion for hot rods, fishing, and camping. He was a simple man, and if you
asked him, he would always say, "I'm just a logger from Waldport, Oregon."
When he retired, he moved from Boise to Warden, Washington, where he lived out his
life camping, fishing, and spending time with his well-loved pups, Cinnamon and
Tracker, and staying in contact with his family and friends as much as possible.
James is survived by his daughter Corissa Choate; his four sisters, Mildred Kennedy,
Lily Thompson, Edna Anderson, and Diane Firestone; and many nieces and nephews.
James is preceded in death by his parents Edward Z. Choate Jr. and Annie Louise
Choate/Murphy and three sisters, Shirley Taylor, Janice Bauer, and Rosan Borja, as well
as his beloved daughter Gina D'lynn Choate.
A Celebration of Life will take place on August 31, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at
6100 Thurston Rd., Springfield, Oregon, Shelter B, behind Splash, with a meetup for
drinks at Sharky's Pub, 4221 Main St., Springfield, to follow.
