Mark Allen Hixson

Mark Allen Hixson, 86, a longtime resident of central Washington and formerly of his beloved self-built farm, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata, Washington, following a heart attack. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, self-reliance, and a quirky sense of humor.

Mark was a true “school of hard knocks” graduate, often sharing stories with his children about leaving school to help on his family’s homestead in the Okanogan Valley.  Despite this early departure from formal education, he was a fervent believer in the power of learning and encouraged his children to pursue their academic goals. 

While Mark rarely spoke in detail about his childhood, he frequently expressed his love for the beauty of the Okanogan Valley.  He held a lifelong appreciation for farming, nurturing a dream of owning a thriving farm.  Known to local farmers as a hardworking and dependable neighbor, he instilled his strong work ethic and mechanical skills in his children.   

Mark found joy in tinkering around his small farm, skillfully maintaining vehicles and machinery, constructing shelters for his livestock and enjoying the fruits of his labor.  His unique sense of humor, though not always appreciated by all, brought him immense satisfaction.  Any reaction, positive or negative, was enough to brighten his entire day.  He also enjoyed camping, spontaneously driving to town for yard sales or a meal and taking scenic drives to simply appreciate the landscape. 

Mark is survived by his big brother, Merle, and three children, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  A memorial service will be held once arrangements have been finalized.
