Roberta Ann Bottem

Roberta Ann (Mckenzie) Bottem, 79, a beloved resident of Moses Lake, Washington, passed away on Friday, December, 15th, 2023, in Moses Lake, Washington.

Born on May 16, 1994, in Roseburg, Oregon, to Polly Anna May and Clyde James Mckenzie, Roberta, affectionately known as “Bobbie,” later moved to Pendleton, Oregon, where she graduated from high school. In 1962, she married the love of her life, John Dennis Bottem, with whom she shared a deep and enduring bond. Their union blessed them with two children, Loretta Lee and Joel Raymond.

Bobbie and John embarked on a journey through various locations in Washington State, starting in Richland, then Yakima and Des Moines, before finding their home in Moses Lake in 1976. In Moses Lake, the couple, alongside Bobbie’s sister Juanita and brother-in-law Marvin Pleinis, owned and operated two cherished local grocery stores, Boyle’s Plaza and J & M Family Grocery.

The entrepreneurial spirit Bobbie and her best friend, Rita Osborn, led them to open the Hang Out restaurant and bar, an establishment that thrived for nearly three decades. Even after the passing of Rita and her husband John in 2001, Bobbie remained devoted to the business, finding purpose and joy in its operation. Her daughter, Loretta, returned to Moses Lake in 2004 to assist Bobbie in running the Hang Out, demonstrating the strength of their family bonds.

While the demands of the Hang Out kept Bobbie rooted in Moses Lake, it became a source of fulfillment and accomplishment for her. Through the years, she created a welcoming space for the community to gather, forging lasting connections and memories.

Bobbie is survived by her two sisters, Bonita Kleinberg and Mona Mcilvenna; her daughter, Loretta (Pat) Roragen; her son, Joel (Siobhan) Bottem; grandchildren Jeffery (Jenn) Delauney, Shelbey (Jeff) Harwell, Conner (Katrece) Murphy, Ryan Bottem, and Marina Bottem; as well as several beautiful great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Clyde James McKenzie; her mother, Polly Anna May; her brother, William “Bill” Clyde McKenzie and sister Juanita Marie Pleinis; and her husband, John Dennis Bottem.

Roberta Ann Bottem will be remembered for her strength, resilience, and the profound impact she had on her family, friends, and the Moses Lake community. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love and warmth she shared throughout her remarkable life.
